Explore the art of automatic writing in a rare 25-year-old interview with New Age healer, Prema Rajan, and her spiritual guide, the Sunflower Angel.
A YouTube video on automatic writing recently transported me back 25 years, to my first job at Life Positive, India’s pioneering New Age magazine. The spiritual coach in the clip claimed to be a pioneer of automatic writing in India, though these mystical practices often predate the digital age. I remembered my own initiation into this world in 1999—not as a believer or student, but as a skeptical young correspondent grappling with the unseen dimensions that practitioners swore by.
Back then, trust moved quietly through word-of-mouth; esoteric arts like reiki, crystal therapy, and more existed in the hands of a few. The mass amplification came much later with YouTube (born on February 14, 2005). Reporting was equally old-school: pen, paper, recorder, face-to-face encounters with trusted sources.
It was during one such assignment that I met Prema Rajan, a Delhi-based healer. I was to report on her channelling messages from her spiritual companion—the Sunflower Angel—using automatic writing. The YouTube video rekindled the urge to search for Prema online. I couldn’t find her digital footprints. What surfaced instead was my own article from a quarter-century ago: Interview with an Angel.
Revisiting that interview, I felt a shift. My skepticism has lost its edge. The world is no longer black and white and one-dimensional, just an echo of the human desire to bridge the gap between the seen and the unseen with its infinite dimensions.
Automatic writing is hardly a new phenomenon. India’s mystical traditions are rich with tales of yogis and rishis receiving scripts by divine inspiration: tantric treatises and astrological texts to name a few. In the last century, figures like the American author Jane Roberts famously channeled the entity Seth, recording messages believed to come from higher planes.
I have never tried automatic writing myself, though I know people who vouch for its clarity and insight. If curiosity calls, the practice is simple: clear your space, invoke your guides or deities, sit in silence with pen and paper, and let words flow without the conscious mind stepping in. Pro tip: Work with your non-dominant hand. And it takes multiple attempts because you need to align with your guides and angels before you get the downloads. In the first few attempts, you might not recognise your handwriting also.
If the mysterious arouses a spark, then this old interview might make it a flame.
Interview with an Angel by Ambica Gulati

The Sunflower angel is Prema Rajan’s constant companion. The angel replied to our questions through Prema in automatic writing.
• Why did you choose to communicate with Prema Rajan?
I have been with her for many lives but she has become aware of me only now.
• Have you met God?
Yes. God is a concentrated form of energy with love for all beings.
• Do angels have gender? Do you belong to a particular religion?
Angels do have gender. I am male. Two thousand years ago, I was a Buddhist monk.
• What do you wear?
We are covered with an etheric layer.
• How can human beings meet angels?
We like to communicate with good souls, mostly with those with whom we are connected by karma. You can reach us by prayers but it must be a pure call. Though we are not visible, you can sense our presence.
• Are you not interfering with laws of nature by communicating with humans?
We communicate with only those whom God wills us to talk to.
Today, digital gurus and viral tutorials promise instant connection to the other side, but can that really happen? Do share your experience and thoughts.
