The Great Indian Kapil Show Review: Hits & Misses on Netflix

Is ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ a laugh riot or a repetitive rut on Netflix? We dive into the world of Kapil Sharma’s popular Indian comedy talk show to see if it hits the mark for a global audience.

Kapil Sharma is a household name in India, known for his quick wit and relatable humor. His comedy shows have been a staple of Indian television for years. Now, making his way to Netflix, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ raises the question: can Kapil’s brand of comedy translate to a global platform?

What Works: Laughter is Universal

The show’s core strength lies in its focus on family-friendly humor. Kapil’s jokes center on everyday situations and relationships, making them relatable to a wide audience. Additionally, the show’s celebrity interviews and skits offer a glimpse into Indian culture, which can be a fun watch for those unfamiliar.

Room for Improvement: Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

While the familiar formula might work for an established fanbase across India and perhaps some places in the UAE and Middle East, the show can feel repetitive at times. Some jokes rely heavily on wordplay specific to the Hindi language, leaving non-Hindi speakers scratching their heads. Additionally, the first episode’s gags focussed on a particular Bollywood movie and might not have resonated with a global viewer, since Sharma reiterated n number of times that they now reached 190 countries. The second episode with cricketers was an improvement, Indian cricket team being a global phenomenon.

What Critics Are Saying

Reviews for ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ on Netflix have been mixed. Though the show reached the channel’s Top 3 rankings, most critics cite lack of originality and jokes that miss the mark for a global audience.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re a fan of Kapil Sharma or enjoy family-friendly comedy with a touch of Indian culture, ‘The Great Indian Kapil Show’ might be a fun watch. However, if you’re looking for something groundbreaking or innovative, you might want to explore other options on Netflix.

For Stand-up Fans: Vir Das, Hasan Minhaj and Trevor Noah shows are unmissable. They cater to the global audience with gags that anyone, anywhere can relate to.

The Verdict:

The ‘Great Indian Kapil Show’ offers a familiar brand of humor that might resonate with die-hard Kapil Sharma fans in India. It’s a popular family show and the elderly in India love his humour. However, its repetitive nature and culture-specific jokes might not appeal to everyone. It airs every Saturday at 8 pm.

  1. I remember it was a comedy show for the whole family when The Great Indian Kapil Show was first aired, but gradually the puns became repetitive so I gave up . Also, Kapil became a bit of a egocentric anchor which was boring.Well reviewed Ambica!

  2. I haven’t watched it on Netflix because frankly there’s a lot of good content on Netflix. May be their show was ok for TV and not for OTT IMO. However, I saw lot of shorts of their episode with Rohit Sharma and it was pretty cute.

  3. For the life of me I don’t understand why men are dressed as women in the Kapil show. It is cheap comedy. And has become so monotonous. I wish there could be total stand up roasts that I watch on Youtube. I watched Vir Das live and he was mesmerising.

  4. In the beginning, I liked the concept of a set-up comedy show, like earlier days of DD National. However, as you rightly mentioned over a period of time, it started looking repetitive and eventually boring. So, currently, not a huge fan of this comedy act show.

  5. I’ve been watching Kapil Sharma ever since his Laughter Challenge days and find him repetitive now. Also, I don’t like how he roasts people on their appearance and status. This show seems missable. Lots of other stuff on Netflix to explore.
